The Red Byrd Petroglyph, if its story is true, it changes the American historical record.The rock is also known as The Stone of Witness. According to James Burchell these engravings verify that ancient people were in North American long before Christopher Columbus touched its shores.


We had initially planned on dropping by a couple of places related to the Hatfield & McCoy Feud. Alas, these museums are closed on Mondays. So we stopped by the Pike County Tourist Center to see whether we could get tips on finding landmarks on our own.

It proved to be tougher than we thought since the docent’s ink scratches on the marked map were not in the correct locations. We did our best. Pikeville KY has a nice old town center.


In both Kentucky and West Virginia (and in other places) it seems that the people love chopping and slicing their hillsides off to make room for roads or shopping centers. That’s one way to clear up (or ruin) a hilly area!


In Williamson WV we found a house made of coal. It was built in 1933. If you look at the picture you might know why building a house from coal never really got popular.


Abe Lincoln is honored in Charleston WV (the capitol city). Why? He helped to create the state after the Civil War. Virginia became smaller.
